DeNA, the makers of the upcoming first-person shooter The Drowning have just released a video that explains the game’s unique control mechanic. Instead of replicating a controller with touch sticks and buttons like the N.O.V.A. series, they’ve designed the controls around taps and swipes. You can watch developer Ben Cousins explain it in detail in the video below.

Like in Horn, The Drowning has you tap where you want to go, but the game has pathfinding built in to make it a little less cumbersome. To move the camera, you swipe with one finger, and to shoot, you tap with two fingers and a bullet fires at the midpoint between your taps. From the look of it, it’ll take a little getting used to, but we’ll wait to try it before judging.

The Drowning puts you in the shoes of one of the few survivors of a global catastrophe that has devastated the world and left cadaverous creatures walking the earth. The gameplay will revolve around you shooting enemies and collecting parts to craft new weapons. You can read more about the game and watch another trailer here. The Drowning will be free to play, and will launch in “early 2013.”
