Review: Epic War TD for iPhone & iPad

When gaming started to get more serious on iOS, one genre I knew would be really popular among iOS gamers were tower defense games.

Some of the most notable titles has been Fieldrunners and Plants vs. Zombies. The rest are pretty much the same kind of game, except they have a different theme, towers, and types of enemies that will blindly run through a maze in order to attack your base, steal your eggs, or just cause havoc once they reach the end of the maze.

Epic War TD might resemble your run-of-the-mill tower defense game on the surface, but after sinking a number of hours into the game, I can tell you that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover as Epic War TD is a game that will keep fans of tower defense games entertained for hours.

As with the majority of traditional tower defense games, you’ll start each level building towers in order to take down wave after wave of enemies. Where some tower defense games focuses on one or two upgrades to towers that upgrade it in general, Epic War TD allows you to upgrade a tower’s damage, attack rate, and range. You can upgrade a single tower up to four times in each category, but each tower’s pricing for each level of upgrade differs depending on the tower. In total, there are 5 different types of towers you can build.

Once you’ve built your towers, you can start the onslaught. The game includes 14 different types of enemies and each time you play Epic War TD, the waves are automatically generated, so each playthrough will never be the same. Each enemy has different resistances to your towers, so it would be in your best interest to build a nice mix of multiple towers. As you defeat enemies, you’ll receive money that goes towards upgrading your towers. From time to time, money will also drop once an enemy is defeated, which you’ll need to tap in order to collect it. In total, there are 4 different levels to play across with 60 waves of enemies to fight through.

Epic War TD is an absolutely gorgeous game on both the iPhone & iPad. The maps, towers, and enemies have a great 3D look to them. Even with a bunch of towers and enemies on screen, I never noticed any slowdown in performance, which is impressive given how highly detailed the game is. The amount of carnage, explosions, and blood can fill the screen, especially the latter. You’ll have to literally wipe the screen of all the blood that’s been spilled in order to play, which I felt was a nice touch.

Epic War TD’s developer promises to continue to support the game by offering upcoming updates that will bring 2 more levels to the game as well as an online multiplayer mode.

FINAL THOUGHT: If you’re looking for a more serious tower defense game that doesn’t include cowboys & indians or anything remotely cutesy, then Epic War TD is your game. Given the fact that each time you play the game randomly generates your enemies, it’s a game that can certainly have unlimited replay value.
